Montserrat Mountain Museum

The Montserrat Mountain Museum is housed in the well-known “dormers of Can Casas” (carrer del Bruc del Mig, 55), a modernist building constructed at the end of the 19th century. The museum has a surface area of 400 m2, split into three sections:

1) “Mountain Climbing in Montserrat”, which displays a collection of climbing equipment dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. It also includes examples of all the elements used from the 1950s to the present day. One of the most notable historical items is the aluminium statuette of Our Lady of Montserrat, cast by climbers in the 1950s using aluminium water bottles, cutlery and dishes. It also displays reproductions of the older and newer statues previously or still placed at the summit of Cavall Bernat, the iconic rock on the northern face of the Montserrat mountain range.

2) “The Battles of El Bruc”, which displays items of the French troops and the somatents (Catalan militia) that fought on two occasions in this area. Cannonballs, shrapnel, grenades, bayonets… the collection also includes reproductions of period uniforms, sabres, pistols, etc.

3) “The Nature of Montserrat and its Surroundings”, a display of archaeological elements and fossils from the area. Visitors can also see a series of prints, engravings and old photos that show us what the area looked like at the time or over subsequent decades.

This Museum of the Magical Mountain of Montserrat aims to be a leading facility for the first two themes, since the series of glass cabinets and other display units housed in the museum contain a large number of historical artefacts that highlight the main attractions of the municipality and of the Montserrat Mountain area.

Visits can be booked by calling the Town Council on 93 771 00 06 (land line) or Mr Pere Redón on 696 62 95 47 (mobile line).

Visits are free of charge.
