Park – New Cemetery of Igualada
This facility, designed by Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós, was the winning project of the competition held by Igualada City Council in 1983.
The project for the new cemetery, far removed from the traditional cemetery concept, aimed to present it as a park for strolling, with no need to be surrounded by the images typically associated with such facilities. The design involved making a single hollow in the ground, along the walls of which the burial niches would be placed.
By placing most of the cemetery within this large hollow in the ground, it blends in very well with the terrain and landscape. Visitors to the park-cemetery will find plenty of hidden corners, objects and details that constantly play with light and shade, affording the entire construction great symbolism.
The new cemetery, which has been widely featured in specialised publications, won a FAD (Fostering Arts and Design) Architecture Award.
